“My father can go to hell! I’m not going anywhere!”
“Oh I think we can change your mind there.” Before I could ask what the hell he was talking about, I heard a noise coming from the kitchen. I didn’t have a chance to move before Luca was coming out of there, his arm around Amy, pinning her to his body as he held a knife to her throat.
“Amy!” I went to take a step but Jerry got in my way.
“Nah uh. I don’t think so, princess. You move and Luca will slit her throat before you can blink.” Remembering I still had my phone in hand and that I had programmed my speed dials, I discreetly hit one and held it down. I waited until it connected before I spoke again.
“Amy, are you okay?”
“I’m fine, babe. Please, whatever you do, you can’t go with them.”
“I’m not letting them kill you. That’s not an option.”
“I won’t let you go, Kaitlyn, they will kill you if you go back. Your father’s orders. He wants you to submit or die.”
“Enough!” My head turned to look at Jerry.
“Please, I will do whatever you want. Just don’t hurt her.”
“Now there’s a good girl.” Jerry went to walk toward me but I stepped back.
“Let her go. Then you will get what you want.”
“This isn’t a negotiation, princess. You are coming with me. You have played around long enough but we both know you are on the wrong side of town. It’s time to stop slumming it with this bitch and that asshole biker. They are no good for you.” He reached out to grab me but I ran for it. Hoping I could get to Amy before Luca had realized what was happening but as I reached her, I heard a gunshot followed by screams. Was that me screaming? I didn’t know.
“You stupid bitch!” Ignoring Jerry, my eyes landed on Amy. She was on the ground, her hands over her stomach.
“No!” I dropped to the ground and crawled toward her. There was blood coming from between her fingers. I ran over and pulled the towel from the bench and pressed it against her wound. “Please, Amy, hang on!” I looked down at my phone which was still connected to the call to Kane before I dropped it.
“It’s okay, Kait. My parents are here.” She gave me a small smile and closed her eyes. Pressing harder against the wound, it was no good though, it didn’t stop the blood flow.
“No! Please no, open your eyes. Hang in there, Amy!” Her parents died when she was sixteen. If she was seeing them then she was anything but okay. I heard the sound of a door bursting open. Help arrived but it was too late. “Amy!” I felt arms around me, I screamed her name but whoever had me, was taking me away from her. My best friend; dead. It was all my fault.
I’m not really sure what happened next. One minute I was in the apartment with Amy and the next I was somewhere else with no recollection of how I had gotten here or where here even was. Looking down at my hands, they were red with blood. I needed to wash this off. Looking around the room I was in, I got up and moved to the door. Once I figured out where I was, then I could deal with this mess. Where was my phone? I patted my hands against my jeans, unable to feel it. Maybe whoever had grabbed me had it. Reaching out to rest my hand on the door handle, the door opened. I quickly moved back from it.
“You’re awake.” I felt myself relax when I saw Kane. Rushing to him and wrapping my arms around him, I hid my face in his neck. I didn’t care if I covered us in blood. We could shower later. I just needed him. I closed my eyes as his hands moved up my back. “It’s okay, Bonnie. I’ve got you. You’re okay now.”
“Amy-” I choked out, unable to say anything else.
“I know, I’m so sorry. We tried to help her. We were too late.”
“It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have run away. If I had stayed with my parents then she would still be alive.”
“Hey.” He pulled back so he could look me in the eyes. “This is not your fault. We have the guys who did this and I promise you, they will get what is coming to them but you cannot blame yourself. You didn’t pull that trigger.”
“No, but I moved! If I had just stayed where I was, he never would have shot her.”
“You don’t know that. They were taking you away from there one way or another. Killing Amy the way they did, meant you were scared and would be more likely to go with them. I won’t let you go back there. Your father is not a good man. It may be too late for your mother to see it but I won’t let that happen to you.”
“He will send more people for me. He will never stop.”
“Yes, and we will stop them too. You are protected now, Bonnie. I am sorry we failed Amy. I should have had better eyes on you both but I promise you, I will not let them take you from me.” I hid my face back in his neck, hiding the tears. Why couldn’t it have been me? It should have been. I was nothing but a burden on everyone. Kane would come to see this and regret protecting me. I wouldn’t be surprised if he delivered me to my dad when he did.
“Please, never let me go, Kane.”
“I don’t plan on it. Like it or not, you are stuck with me.”
“Until you get bored of me.”
“You are going to keep me on my toes, Kait, I feel it. No matter
