the way we came from, but we could run into our reapers which is probably a worse scenario.

She has her eyes closed and then opens them, to grab my hand. Pulling me a small way down the hall.

I’m not sure what we’re going to do. This hallway has no doors and the guard is almost on us. This is the end of the road for us. I wish we could have the cloaking ability the others got. We had a good run, right? In all reality, we made it farther than I thought we would have.

As I follow along, I note where there is a small recessed door. There are several phones lined up there and there are chairs pulled up to the table mounted to the wall. Huh, this must be a nice prison. All the television shows I see, they’re all standing.

Not missing a beat, Christina dives under the table and tries to hide behind a chair.

It doesn’t take me long to follow suit. I never knew until this moment how strong her survival skills were. She seems to be able to figure out the best alternative in any given situation.

As soon as we get settled, the guard is right on us. He’s shining his light on every nook and cranny. “They think I’m crazy, but something feels off.” He shivers. “It’s like death is surrounding us.”

I cover my mouth with my hands to hold back my laughter. This guy has no clue how right he is. He must have some kind of diluted supernatural blood running through him

He continues his examination of the entire space and comes to our small section. He bends down and begins his search under the table.

This is it. The beginning of the end and we’re caught by a guard, nonetheless. We had a good run, but I don’t know what a human is going to do when he finds us. Can the elders even get us out of a situation like this? Will they?

Then the flashlight hits us, and Christina reaches out and grabs my hand hard. Yes, we’re in this together to the very end. Like always.

But to my amazement, he keeps on moving. Did he not see us? He was staring right into my eyes. How is that possible? Did we somehow get the cloaking abilities as well? I figured we had to be in the same room as the others to get it. Not wanting to chance fate, I make myself wait before moving an inch.

It doesn’t take much longer before he finishes his search and is moving on to the next location.

His footsteps disappear so we both crawl out from our hiding spot.

“What the hell was that?” I turn to Christina having a hard time keeping my tone low. “How did he not see us?”

“I’m assuming it’s because of the witch.” She bites her lip. “They did say she was shadowing all the reapers in the prison from the guards. I think we got included by default.”

That makes sense and is awesome. “Hell, yeah. So, we don’t have to hide.”

She narrows her eyes at me. “We don’t need to push it and we can’t be a hundred percent sure it’s a guard until they’re on us.” She heads back down the hall. “We have to be careful.”

Why does she have to be so responsible all the time? Granted it has served us well, but it does take some of the fun out of it. “Fine. All right.” We’re so close. I don’t want to ruin it now.

After staying silent for a moment, we head on toward where the prisoners are resting. There is a large double door that comes into view.

“Maybe we shouldn’t get any closer.” Christina stops right in front of the double doors.

“But why?” I hope she’s not changing her mind again. We’re so freaking close.

“It just feels off.” She turns to me, her hands out and her eyes searching for something. “Like we shouldn’t be here.”

“That witch probably did a spell or something.” I have to get in there and protect my brother. “Come on, the bomber is probably already there.”

She rubs her hands together and bounces one leg. “Yeah, you’re right.”

“It’ll be fine.” I grab one of her hands and smile. “I promise.” I keep a hold of her hand as she stays silent. If I let her go, I might lose my influence.

“Okay,” She breaths out, “you’re right. It’s just something feels off.”

“We need to hurry.” I’m going to fake this, ‘til I make this, but I need her on board.

“Well, all right.” She points to the door. “We need a way to get in there. That’s where we need to be and not get seen in the process of doing it.”

That’s a problem. There’s no handle and we don’t have the keycard needed to gain access. Dammit, we should have swiped it from the guard at the front desk. “What are we going to do?”

As if fate was answering my question, the door opened. Christina stumbles backward but stops.

We have nowhere to hide. I call the shadows to me, hoping they cloak us like before.

A figure is at the door, and as the door opens further, my brother’s face is revealed.

Oh shit. Now we are in trouble.

His mouth drops open when he sees me and Christina. “What the hell are you two doing here?” He glances behind him and then focuses back on us. “Are you both insane?”

“No, but I’m worried about you.” I pout, that used to work on him.

He groans. “You guys are going to get caught.” He turns back in the direction he came from and tilts his head. “Both of you follow me and stay close.” He takes off.

Not needing any other encouragement, we follow him. There is an intersection where you can turn left and go to where all the inmates must be sleeping or to the right. He goes right and pulls out a key that opens the door to a small storage closet that is
