past him and looked out a window into the front yard.  She turned right back around and screamed for them to go out the back door instead.  Judging by the panicked look on her face there wasn’t time to pack.  She flew past them to fling open the sliding glass door leading out to the backyard.

Drew and LeBron ran out right behind Yue who turned around and immediately slammed the slider shut.  She’d barely shut it when a tween looking freak slammed into the glass.  The tween hit it hard enough to make them all wonder if the thick glass slider was going to break or come out of the wall.  Seeing another six or seven surgers coming right after that one Yue yelled for them to run.

“We can’t outrun them!”  Drew yelled.

“There’s a ton of them in the front yard!”  Yue answered breathing hard.  She was staring down the little overgrown brick lined path at the dock below.  She started running that way with LeBron and Drew coming right behind her.  Drew spun around when he heard the sound of glass breaking behind them.  He brought up his rifle as the surgers poured out through the broken slider.  Yue and LeBron lined up beside him and they found themselves once again trying to hold the line.

“We have to break away and get to the dock! There’s too many of them!”  Yue yelled over the sound of their rifles.  These surgers were mostly silent.  A few of them did scream out a challenge when they them, but the bulk of them were as silent as the dead.  The silence was way creepier than screaming would’ve been.  It made them seem more intense.  Like the infection was in full control of them.  Riding their bodies like a rage filled jockey urging its mount on until it finished the race or fell over dead from the extreme exertion.

LeBron tripped and fell into the tall grass shooting a round straight into the sky.  He peeked behind them and saw they were getting close to the edge of the dock.  He looked at the house and saw they were never going to be able to stop the onslaught completely.  It was a miracle they hadn’t been overrun already.  There were a lot of infected crawling towards them.  They hadn’t been trying for head shots.  Just aiming for center of mass and hoping that slowed their attackers down enough for them to make it to the dock.

“We have to run!”  LeBron yelled.  If they didn’t run, they’d just sit there shooting until they ran out of ammunition.  Once they ran out of ammunition they’d be overrun.  LeBron punched Drew in the shoulder and yelled out the need to run again.  Drew was in full on Rambo mode standing tall screaming and hurling lead at the enemy.  LeBron gave up on verbal communications and grabbed Drew with his good hand to drag him backwards.  Drew finally got the point.  They broke contact with the enemy and turned to make a desperate run for the dock.

They managed to make it onto the dock before the first pursuer caught up with them.  Drew had been trying to stay in the back to cover his brother and sister.  He felt a pair of hands tugging at his shirt from behind trying to fling him on the ground.  Instead of going down he launched into a spin move like the starting varsity running back he’d been in his former life.  The surger slammed into the wooden dock face first and instantly started scrambling back up.  Drew pointed his rifle and pulled the trigger twice.  The first round blew the back of the surgers head off.  The second time he pulled the trigger he just heard an impotent click.

There was no time to change out mags.  More attackers were sprinting across the lawn for them.  Drew pulled out his pistol and began jogging backwards down the dock shooting the surgers when they got too close.  He didn’t want to waste any more bullets than he had to.  The boathouse had an expensive looking covered ski boat hanging off a complicated looking pulley system.  There was a pegboard beside it with a bunch of lifejackets hanging off it under a small roof.  In the dusky light more surgers were pounding down the dock towards them.  They were coming on unbelievably fast as the three of them used up the rest of the bullets in their magazines.

One got past the bullets filling the air and took LeBron with it off the dock into the lake.  Drew unhesitatingly pulled out his knife and jumped into the water where LeBron had disappeared.  Yue yanked a bunch of the lifejackets off the holder and tossed them into the water.  She was about to jump in when a completely insane older woman wearing a stain covered bra and equally dirty bloomers rammed into her from behind causing them both to tumble off the dock.

Drew hit the water letting himself sink down with his eyes wide open searching for LeBron.  He couldn’t really see anything in the murky water.  He flailed his arms around hoping to get lucky enough to grab LeBron. A set of hands grabbed him by the head pulling him backwards.  He fought off the hands by ripping at the face of the person trying to pull him down.  He needed to find LeBron.  A kick landed in his crotch and he let out his breath.  He desperately struggled to paddle his way up for a breath of air.  His face broke the surface of the water and LeBron punched him hard right in the nose.

“Sorry!” LeBron gasped as soon as he realized who he’d hit.

“Are you ok?”  Drew asked in a worried voice.  The coppery taste of blood filled his mouth, but he could care less about being kicked and hit.  He was terrified the surger who’d ridden his brother off
