I come out alone upon the highroad;
Through the mist the flinty way gleams far.
The night's calm. The wilderness is harking
To the Lord, and star speaks unto star.
In the heavens all is grave and wondrous;
The earth sleeps, by bkuish radiance lit.
Whence comes, then, this painful, irksome feeling?
Expectation? Heartache? What is it?
Yet from life I'm now expecting nothing
And I don't regret one bit the past.
All I want is dreamless sleep at last.
Let it, though, not be the tomb's cold slumber;
I would wish to slumber in such wise
That in me life's forces would be dormant,
That my breast would gently fall and rise,
that all day, all night, in lulling accents
A sweet voice would sing to me of love,
that a somber oaktree, ever greening,
Would incline its rustling boughs above.
