make a sound. The longer we were there, the more my skin crawled.

Eventually, David stopped in front of a door. He glanced at Travis and me before he flung open the door. There were no unpleasant surprises this time. Kait was sitting in a chair, waiting for us.

He glared at David for a second before leveling his gaze at me.

“Good job, Princess. You put your training to good use. David, we need to talk later.”

David glared back. “Whatever. We need to go. Do you want to make the gateway, or should I?”

Kait’s voice was cold. “You.” He turned to Travis. “Get the door. Lock it then stand guard.”

Travis gave him a puzzled looked before following his instructions. Kait came over to me, then he ran his hands over my arms before pulling me into a hug. He kissed the top of my head as he held me.

Pushing me away just a bit so he could look into my eyes, he said, “Are you alright?”

“Yes, I’m fine. I didn’t have any problems.”

He laughed, but it sounded forced. “From what I can see in your mind, you handled the situation perfectly.”

I wasn’t comfortable with praise, so I ignored his statement. “What about Sarah, Janelle and Sibhre? Were they taken as well?”

Kait nodded. “I believe they were, but they weren’t brought here. We need to go and do some recon. I need to talk to you, as well as David.”

His voice had a funny note in it. “What’s wrong, Kait?”

“Nothing to worry you.” He pulled me back in, bringing me flush with his body. My face was pushed against his shoulder, so I couldn’t look him in the eye. There was something funny going on here.

“Kait, you told me before they weren’t going to abduct me again, that they wanted to kill me. Why am I here?”

“We will talk about it later, Princess. Right now, we need to leave.”

God damn it. I hated his vague answers, but he was right. The gateway was open, and we needed to leave before someone came to investigate. Kait released me, and Travis held out his hand. When I put my hand in his, he pulled me through the gateway.

I was on my hands and knees in the safe house, fighting the waves of nausea when Kait stepped through. I was still there a moment later when David stepped through and closed the gateway behind himself. I glared at them.

“I thought you guys said I would get used to this. Why am I still sick every time I use a gateway?”

Kait smiled. “Some people are more susceptible to sickness from gateways, just like some people get motion sickness easier.”

“So, this is never going to stop? Great.” I was still dry heaving, but I forced myself to stand up anyway. “You said you wanted to talk to me.”

“Yes, but I need to talk to David first.”

David glared at him, his face dark. He seemed extremely angry, more than was reasonable. Kait just shook his head, put his hand on David’s shoulder and leaned in to whisper something in his ear. David shook his head. Kait whispered something else, and David hung his head and followed him out of the room.

I looked at Travis. “Do you know what that was all about?”

He shook his head. “No, but it didn’t seem good.” We both stared after them for a minute, until Travis said, “Great job, Babe. I’m really proud of you for rescuing yourself and all of us.”

I beamed at him. “Thanks. I’m proud of myself, too. I am worried about everyone else, though.”

He nodded, still staring at the door. After a minute, he shrugged and looked away.

Concerned, I asked, “What did they do to you, Travis?”

“I don’t think they did anything. I woke up on the table, and you guys were there within minutes after that. Did they do anything to you?”

I spun my braid. “I don’t know, but I don’t think so. Kait picked up from the informant that they were just going to kill me, so I don’t really understand why they abducted me this time. Kait seemed to know, though.”

“Come here, babe.” He held his arms out. I went over to him, and he wrapped me up in a big hug. He swept me up in his arms before carrying me to the living room. He sat down, putting me in his lap as he did. I snuggled into the hollow of his neck with my face. As usual, his forest scent helped calm my nerves. I fell asleep like that.

Chapter 15

I don’t know how long I slept in Travis’s arms, but my legs were sound asleep when David woke me up. I groaned as I moved, the tingles a painful reminder of why not to sleep like that. Travis groaned as well, but he sat stiffly, not moving at all.

Feeling evil, I tapped his leg, causing him to jump. “What? Your legs asleep too?” He just glared at me.

“More than my legs, it goes all the way up. Nothing is worse than having your privates fall asleep.”

I stifled a giggle. “Yeah, that would be bad. So, if I hit here,” I tapped him on the knee, “The tingles go all the way up?”

His eyes were watering as he nodded. “Stop!”

I actually giggled at that. I just couldn’t help myself. David rolled his eyes, and said quietly, “Kait wants to talk to us.” The tone of voice, and the look on his face was uncharacteristically monotone and sad. I wrapped my arms around him.

“What’s wrong, sweetie?”

He shrugged. “Nothing. Let’s go talk to Kait.”

If he didn’t want to talk, I wasn’t going to be able to make him, so I just went along with him. I swear the sadness was rolling off him. By the time we had made it to the dining room where Kait was waiting, I was almost in tears. Kait took one look at us, and sighed.

“David, please come sit by me, for now.”

David sighed and walked over to the other
