the loss. He chuckled as if he knew, as if my body communicated with him. Shaking his head he walked off the elevator. Mac who still stood holding the doors open, looked at me and the relief in his gaze could not be mistaken for anything else.

He had been afraid Gabe was going to hurt me. It had been the reason why he inserted himself so aggressively between us upstairs.

“Jerome, stay with the ladies. Make sure they have a good time with no problems.” He muttered before he let go of the elevator doors, letting them close.

The Honeymoon Part 2

Yasmin

I had the fever.

And for the life me I don’t know how I got it. After Gabe and his men exited the elevator, me and the few other women that was with our little group stood staring at the doors. Each lost in our own thoughts.

“Damn, he is so intense!” Mac’s lady friend said, being the first to get a hold of herself.

“I am so jealous of you right now.” Another one of the ladies said to me. I turned to look at her appalled. What the world was wrong with these women? They were all looking at me as if I was the luckiest damn girl on the planet.

I didn’t tell them that I disagreed with them, for two reasons. One, I knew from experience it would do no good. Like the girls at Shugga’s, these ladies had their minds made up about Gabriel. They couldn’t see past the money, the muscles, and of course his ability to make a girl feel like she was melting from the inside out.

If you can get past all that, then you will see what’s underneath. An aggressive, possessive, psychotic killer, that just so happened to also have anger management problems. I had witness him kill a man as easy as one would swat away a fly. That was not normal!

I mean yeah, technically I had killed a man too, and really didn’t have any grounds to judge him. But I had killed a man out of self defense, and I had nightmares about it every night. Well, except last night, but I’m sure that didn’t have anything to do with Gabriel. Maybe people didn’t dream when they were drunk.

The second reason I didn’t correct these women, was because we were surrounded by Gabe’s men. And I’m pretty sure they were loyal to him and would report back to him what I said. In fact, these women probably would too. I couldn’t trust anyone here!

So, yeah, I kept my thoughts to myself. When we finally made it down to the main floor, Mac’s girl who I found out in the elevator name is Nina, led the charge in getting us all chips and showing us what games was best to play. Apparently, she was a Las Vegas native and knew her way around the casino.

She told us that Gabe was upstairs playing a poker game—invitation only. She said only the filthy rich were invited to games like those.

“But that’s okay, because there are plenty of opportunities for us mere mortals to make just as much money on this level.”

And that’s when she got my attention.

“Like how much money?” I asked trying not to appear over eager.

“Girl, if lady luck is on your side, you can make enough money in one night to reinvent yourself, in another country, with a different identity, and live very comfortable while you do it.” Her eyes flashed at me.

“Easily!”

Okay, so at the time I thought it was pure coincidence that she used those words. Of course, now that my understanding has grown in matters of Powers, Authorities, Principalities and World-Rulers of this Dark Age, it’s easy to see how she had been used to peak my interest and light that flame inside of me.

But alas, I’m getting far ahead of myself. My growth is a whole other story. Now back to how that fever came upon me.

It was a result of the solution to my problem being born. And it came out the mouth of Mac’s girl toy. I could have kicked myself for not seeing it sooner; all this time I had been racking my brain trying to figure a way out of this mess I had gotten myself in.

When the answer was right in front of me the whole time! I needed to get enough money to buy myself a new identity in another country. Had I had enough money the night I killed the Mayor, I could have been long gone by now. My spirits lifted. It looked as if God had not abandoned me after all.

My granddaddy used to say all things happened for a reason. And now I know why God caused me to encounter Gabriel. It was during our time together that I will get enough money to start over somewhere else. And according to Ms. Nina, I could do that tonight.

At first, it did indeed look like lady luck wicked self was on my side. I had tried several games before I found the one that seemed to have been made just for me.

Craps!

Nina helped me get five hundred dollars in chips that she’d charged to me and Gabe’s room. Within the first hour I had won over four thousand dollars. It got so good that people started to cheer me on, telling me I couldn’t lose. Several folks began to rub my arm for luck. I was floating so high I felt like nothing could bring me down.

But then something happened, and I discovered that lady luck was a fickle friend at best.

The private room we played in resembled a small lounge.  There was a beautiful bartender, Rachel, who was Gino’s eyes and ears. Along with her were two lovely waitresses who were trained to serve these high stakes games exclusively. A well trained dealer who was also a female was here with a handful of choice model types to
