И всюду под небом — я вижу! —

О юный Пловец,

‘FRATER AVE ATQUE VALE’

Row us out from Desenzano, to your Sirmione row!
So they row’d, and there we landed — ‘O venusta Sirmio!’
There to me thro’ all the groves of olive in the summer glow,
There beneath the Roman ruin where the purple flowers grow,
Came that ‘Ave atque Vale’ of the Poet’s hopeless woe,
Tenderest of Roman poets nineteen-hundred years ago,
‘Frater Ave atque Vale’ — as we wander’d to and fro
Gazing at the Lydian laughter of the Garda Lake below.
Sweet Catullus’s all-but-island, olive-silvery Sirmio!

FRATER AVE ATQUE VALE

Выплыли из Дезенцано и до Сермия доплыли,
Веслами не потревожив дремлющих озерных лилий.
Над смеющейся волною здесь, о Sermio venusto!
Слышится мне голос ветра среди трав, растущих густо.
Здесь нежнейший из поэтов повторял в своей печали:
До свиданья, братец милый, frater ave atque vale!
Здесь, среди развалин римских пурпуровые соцветья
Так же пьяны, так же сладки через два тысячелетья.
И шумит на бреге Гарды над сверканием залива
Сладкозвучного Катулла серебристая олива!

CROSSING THE BAR

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea.

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.
