Prince Corum rode rapidly down the hill. He rode until he reached the first of the rings of trees and he peered through the other rings but could, as yet, see nothing. He sniffed the smoke.
He passed through more rings of trees and now the smoke stung his eyes and throat and he could see a few black shapes in it.

Castle Sarn lay in the middle of a dense elder forest (замок Сарн располагался в гуще дремучего леса из бузины; to lie-lay-lain; middle — середина, гуща; dense — плотный, частый, густой) and was reached by a pathway (и к нему вела тропа; to reach — протягивать/ся/, доходить) down which the weary Prince in the Scarlet Robe (по которой усталый Принц в Алом Плаще) and his weary horse moved (и его изнуренный конь двигались). Small animals scampered away from them (мелкие зверьки убегали от них; to scamper — носиться, резво скакать; удирать) and a thin rain fell from a brooding sky (мелкий дождик капал с задумчивого неба; thin — тонкий, мелкий, редкий; to fall — падать, идти /об осадках/; to brood — высиживать яйца; размышлять /особенно грустно/, нависать /об облаках/). No smoke rose here (/никакой/ дым не поднимался здесь = дыма не было; to rise).
